I need your advice!

I want to get a digital camera (am I the last on the planet to?). Troy and I (mainly me) are taking so many pictures lately - I'd like to graduate to digital and just get prints made of the best of each 30 or so, which I can easily do online.

Anyway, as much as I'd like a jazzy SLR, I can only afford a very basic model with limited focussing abilities. Something pretty idiot proof, for a real beginner who has access to photoshop. Dear reader, if you have a recommendation for me (and a link to an example would be incredibly helpful) please let me know either in the comments or by email . Can I get something half decent for under $400?
